What's with the name?
Georg Ohm established the fundamental law of electricity which shows how
voltage, current, and resistance are related (V = IR).
Now famously known as Ohm's Law.

While showering, the idea of combining “Home” with “Ohm”, to create Hohm was birthed.
Like Ohm’s Law which governs resistance,
the goal of the company is to reduce resistance to back up power
by making our products affordable, easy to install, and convenient to use.

My name is Alex Gore and I am the founder of Hohm.

This all started because I was fed up with one thing: the power going out. Sometimes it was the wind. Other times, a blown transformer or a downed line. The worst part of it is there is never a good time for the power to go out. During the weekday, my wife would text me about it, but I was powerless to help. On weekends, I worried about how long the outage would last and whether I should move food to the downstairs freezer and buy more ice.

The absolute worst, though, was when I was about to go to bed. My phone was nearly dead, and I realized I wouldn’t even be able to check if the utility company knew about the outage. Thankfully, I’d already bought a generator—just in case.

Of course, it had no wheels. So I dragged it out of the garage, grabbed the gas can (which I have to keep outside in the summer because it stinks up the garage ands the smell seeps into the house), found the funnel to avoid a driveway disaster, and fueled it up. I primed it, yanked the cord—and nothing. Tried again. Still nothing. I kept pulling—harder, smoother, more forcefully—until finally… it roared to life.

It was 9:30 PM. The sun had dipped behind the Colorado mountains, the neighborhood was quiet, and suddenly, my generator sounded way louder than I remembered. Too late to worry about that. I grabbed an extension cord, pulled out the fridge, and got it plugged in.

Then I stood there, next to this screaming beast of a machine, debating whether I should transfer the meat from the basement freezer upstairs. I didn’t. I went upstairs to find my phone charging cable and outlet adapter and plugged them in to charged my phone. Finally caught my breath—and then, like a cruel joke, the power came back on.

So I tried to get smarter. I bought a portable battery—one of those fancy ones that campers/hunters use. It worked, technically, but it came with a new set of problems. It wasn’t designed to stay plugged in or integrate smoothly with my fridge. It had way too many unnecessary inputs and outputs. Its design is made for the great outdoors, not something you want sitting in your kitchen.

So I kept it in the garage, it's convenient to take camping, and I would have to pull out the fridge and plug it all in when the power goes out. Still, I thought I had it all figured out.

Then came the stomach flu. Both my kids got it. Two nights of interrupted sleep, constant clean-up, and finally, on night three, the fire alarm blared at 3 a.m. Groggy and panicked, I checked the house. No smoke. No carbon monoxide. But as I walked through the basement in the dark, I felt something cold and wet on the floor.  It wasn’t vomit. I knew that feeling all too well by then. I didn’t investigate right away—just filed it under “after work problem.”

That afternoon, I discovered what had really happened: my basement meat freezer had been unplugged. All the ice had melted, and the water had seeped out. And all that carefully stored food? Ruined.

If only
Hohm had existed then, I would have gotten a simple alert telling me the freezer lost power, I could have saved it all. All those reasons are why I created Hohm.

It’s designed to be beautiful—sleek enough to sit on your counter, tuck into a cabinet, or rest quietly by your fridge. It monitors your appliances, keeps food and medicine safe, charges your phone, and sends real-time alerts when the power goes out. Just place, plug in, and bam you have backup power. All easily and simply.

No more dragging out a generator in the dark. No more pulling out the fridge. No more guessing games. No more waste.

With Hohm, you’re always in the know, and always prepared.
